I have been teaching for 27 years as a self-employed and employed private and peripatetic instrumental woodwind teacher. I currently teach at Broughton High School, Broughton, Preston and Oakhill School and Nursery, Whalley, as a private woodwind tutor and as a self-employed woodwind tutor for Lancashire Music Service (LMS).
With a B.A. (Hons) in music, performance diplomas: ATCL and DipABRSM and a teaching diploma: CT ABRSM (clarinet, saxophone and flute), and full membership to the Incorporated Society of Musicians (ISM) with enhanced DBS, you can be assured that I am a specialist instrumental teacher of woodwind.
I encourage all of my students to work towards external music exams provided by: ABRSM; including Music Medals, University of West London (London College of Music Examinations) and Trinity College London; including Arts Award. As an Arts Award Adviser for: Discover, Explore, Bronze, Silver and Gold, students are supported to document their instrumental learning journey so that it can be used to provide formative assessment in their portfolio in order to meet the requirements to gain accreditation at the appropriate Arts Award level.
Private lessons are taught on an individual basis and within schools also on a small, large and whole class basis (Wider Opportunities Programme). I have experience in conducting small and large ensembles in which opportunities are provided for students to take part in performances. From teaching children with a variety of Special Educational Needs and abilities both in state schools and specialist schools, I am aware of the need for diversity and inclusion when teaching mixed ability groups.
Previously I have taught hundreds of children in schools within the borough of Blackburn with Darwen, as an employee for Blackburn with Darwen Music Service. As part of the Senior Leadership Team at Blackburn with Darwen Music Service; in the role as Manager and Lead Instrumental Woodwind and First Access Tutor, I have had responsibility for developing woodwind tuition within the borough and implementing the Wider Opportunities Programme. Roles and responsibilities have included: staff lesson observations and needs for CPD and training, developing an instrumental curriculum across all specialisms in accordance with the ‘A Common Approach’, organising and delivering in-house training sessions, developing progression pathways for all students, creating music service policies, organising examination entries and visits and providing risk assessments for concerts.
